Frequently asked questions

What is FluteChamp?

FluteChamp is a practice companion for bansuri learners. It listens while you play and helps you understand your breath, pitch, notes, consistency, and progress.

Practise long notes and breath control. Check your swaras and pitch. Work on weak notes and note transitions. Follow guided practice sessions, track your improvement, and learn what to practise next.

Whether you are picking up the bansuri for the first time or building a regular practice routine, FluteChamp helps you practise with clearer feedback and purpose.

Play. Listen. Learn. Practise better.

Do I need to install anything?

No. It runs entirely in your browser at flutechamp.com — no app store, no download, and no account to create.

Is my microphone audio uploaded or recorded?

By default, no — all audio processing happens locally in your browser using the Web Audio API, and nothing is uploaded automatically. There's one optional, off-by-default toggle that records only your current best attempt's clip locally so you can download it; it's gated behind a confirmation dialog, replaces itself automatically when you beat it, and never uploads anywhere on its own. If you're logged in with Premium, a second, separate opt-in can additionally save that same clip to your account so it's available across devices — nothing leaves your device unless you explicitly turn that on too.

Does it work on iPhone and other mobile devices?

Yes. Open the site in a mobile browser like Safari, allow microphone access, and it works like any other page. You can also add it to your home screen for quicker access.

Can I use it for instruments other than flute?

The detection is based on loudness rather than flute tone specifically, so it can time any sustained note — though it's built and named around flute breath practice.

Can I practice Indian classical swaras (Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni) with this app?

Yes. Set your Sa (tonic) from a note dropdown, pick which swara you're practicing, and the app gives live green/yellow/red pitch feedback while you play, plus how many cents sharp or flat you are. It uses standard 12-tone equal temperament, not full microtonal shruti precision.

Can I practice a sequence of swaras (a sargam phrase), not just one note at a time?

Yes — it's a Premium feature. Build a phrase like Ma Ga Re Ga on the Sequences tab, save it, and practice it — each note you play is automatically checked against the next note in the phrase, with live per-note feedback and a summary showing which note in the phrase needs the most work.

Is it free?

The core practice tools — the sustain timer, tuning dial, metronome, fingering chart, and swara pitch feedback — are completely free, no account needed, no ads. A Premium tier (paid manually via UPI, since automated payments aren't set up yet) unlocks sequence practice, progress analytics, recording history, and guided Sadhana sessions.
